Phonemic Awareness

Skills in teaching indicates a lot of innovation and loads of patience. Children love to read and write and the idea must be to inculcate a habit in them. Rhyming words are easy for them to catch and so also they love to sing a song. Investing in songs, books are also an easy way to let the child understand the importance of speaking. Though phonics is a way to learn it is also important to go with a syllabus that is child friendly. Teaching them to write along with phonics helps them to develop their motor skills.

Phonemic awareness means the peculiar sound made by each alphabet and putting it together for the purpose of a word. It also includes the blends in alphabets along with the importance of silent words. Here the child has to give importance to acoustics. As the vocabulary improves, children are keen to know the right pronunciation. Teaching phonics is a joy. The phonemic awareness is about able to understand the word ‘cat’ as a blend of c-a-t, which includes three phonic-sounds.

Reading habits are not only important for growth but also develops interest in a child to progress academically. All children are curious by nature and love to understand new words. There are difficult words that occur as blends like start, stork and strumming. The ‘st’ blend here is easy to understand when done rhythmically and with pictures. The phonemic awareness also improves when more words are made available while teaching.

Teachers in phonics usually go with a set pattern of worksheets combined with other chart activities. Revision lessons too go hand in hand which adds value to memorizing the words. Vowels that is short like ‘o’ are quite different from ‘oo’. Using skills and the proper methodology phonics lessons are very easy to understand. Actually brief introduction is also the subtle method of leading.

While learning ‘m’ use facial expressions that say ‘mmmmm’. Proceeding with new words can happen by reading short stories or read-aloud-stories. Phonemic awareness is the accepted way in teaching that works to build in reading independency. Though with minor assistance or correction the children are aware of the unique sounds and elaborate pronunciation wherever required.

The co-relation between a sound and alphabet can be achieved by a programmed learning of phonics. There could be words like ten and man which have the same ending consonant ‘n’and yet a bit different to sound. Rhyming words are easy to learn and hence playschools insist on rhymes and pomes. Good and Wood rhyme well but certain words that do not rhyme has to be learnt through phonemic awareness. The intention is to learn to read well.

Methodology can be improved by replacing words, odd words or rhyming words. Splitting words like fever and favor teaches them to learn about the syllable well. Here the ‘e’ and ‘a’ is clarified and hence the child is not confused with the spelling manipulation. Weekly lessons and revision plans assure that the child gets into phonemic awareness with a lot of simplicity.
